Chestnut Hill College Wins Pair At Millersville University Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Millersville, Pa. - (9/15/2019) – Chestnut Hill College came out even from the Millersville University Tournament, winning Friday matches versus Virginia Union University (W, 3-0; 25-11, 25-18, 25-15) and Roberts Wesleyan College (W, 3-1; 25-16, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19), before dropping a pair of Saturday matches to West Chester University (3-1; 25-16, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19) and the hosting Marauders (L, 0-3; 10-25, 24-26, 20-25). Freshman setter Henielys Ramos (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) and senior right side Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) were both recognized on the all-tournament team.
 
Chestnut Hill College (2-5) started off strong, using a balanced attack to win three consecutive sets; 25-11, 25-18, 25-15, from Virginia Union University (0-2). Ramos and senior outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) led the effort with nine kills apiece; the former added 15 assists, seven digs, and a pair of block assists to her successful attacks, while the latter also recorded two aces and four digs. Callahan matched Ramos' 15 assists in addition to providing four kills, four aces, six digs, and a block assist. Junior outside hitter Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) chipped in eight kills, an ace, three digs, and a block assist to the Griffins' first win of the season. Sophomore defensive specialist Kerri Sullivan (Coatesville, Pa.) was a weapon on the serve with a career-high nine aces. She also recorded an assist and eight digs.
 
The Scarlet and Gold followed their win over Virginia Union University with a four-set victory; 25-16, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19, over Roberts Wesleyan College (0-7). Kalala was the star of the match for the Griffins with 11 kills, a dig, and two blocks assists. She got plenty of help from Ramos, whose versatile effort produced eight kills, 15 assists, an ace, four digs, a solo block, and two block assists. Sullivan had another strong performance on the serve, totaling eight aces against the Redhawks.
 
Saturday's action started with West Chester University. The Golden Rams used opening wins of 25-16 and 25-13 to get the upper hand on the Griffins, who attempted to rally with a 25-23 win in the third set. Unfortunately, Chestnut Hill College could not keep the momentum as West Chester University ended the match with a 25-19 triumph. Junior middle hitter Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) was effective at the net, logging 10 kills on just 15 attempts. Callahan led six Griffins in double digit digs with 25. Ramos and Byxbee were two of them; the former finished with nine kills and 18 digs, while the latter totaled eight kills and 12 digs.

Millersville University was the last team on the Griffins' docket. The Marauders won the match in three sets, topping Chestnut Hill College by scores of 25-10, 26-24, and 25-20. Kalala had her second double digit kill performance of the weekend with 11. She also recorded four digs. Ramos offered seven kills, 17 assists, nine digs, and two block assists, while Callahan collected three kills, eight assists, an ace, 10 digs, and a pair of block assists.
 
Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Wednesday, September 18, when they open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 7:00 p.m. match at the University of the Sciences (USciences).
