Five players scored multiple times as the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team won their second consecutive game, defeating St. Michael's College 17-9 Sunday afternoon at victory Field #1 in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins improve to 3-3 with the win while the Purple Knights fell to 1-4 on the season.
Ben Revak led the way with four goals and an assist for five points.Â
Mike Smith had three goals and an assist (four points) while
J.R. Howell and
Liam McCann had three goals apiece.Â
Maurice Kelly added two goals and three assists to also finish the game with five points. The Griffins also got a goal from
Cade Johnson and
Zach Schultz.
Austin Jones earned his third win of the season in goal for the Griffins, stopping 16 shots in 55 minutes of playing time. Schultz led the team with nine ground balls while Howell added four.Â
Kyle Gartenmeyer had a game-high four caused turnovers.
Howell, McCann and Revak staked the Griffins to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. St. Michael's came back with two goals in the final 2:18 of the period and another goal just 36 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game at 3-3.
Chestnut Hill followed with four unanswered goals, two of them by Smith to take a 7-3 lead with 3:50 left in the second quarter. A minute later the Purple Knights scored their fourth goal but McCann got it back just 43 seconds later, taking a pass from Kelly to make the score 8-4 as the teams headed to halftime.
Schultz opened the third quarter with a goal off the opening faceoff just 11 seconds in, boosting the griffins lead to 9-4. St. Michael's scored twice to cut the lead to 9-6. Smith then added his third goal of the game and Revak his second before the quarter ended and the Griffins again had a four-goal lead 11-7.
The Griffins scored four straight times in the first 6:25 of the fourth quarter to take a commanding 15-7 lead with Revak scoring twice and Howell adding a man-up goal with 8:35 remaining. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way with the Griffins getting scores from Kelly with 3:14 left and Johnson at the 1:25 mark to round out the scoring.
The Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team is back in action on Tuesday March 15, 2022 when they travel to Baltimore Maryland to take on Frostburg State University in a neutral-site game at Johns Hopkins University. First faceoff is 7:00 p.m.
