Late Goal Lifts Frostburg State to Win over Griffins

A late goal by Frostburg State University broke a 12-12 tie and sent the Bobcats to a 13-12 win against the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse Team Tuesday night at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

The loss drops the Griffins record to 3-4 while Frostburg Improves to 2-2.

J.R. Howell led the Griffins with four goals while Liam McCann and Ben Revak added three and two respectively.  Howell and Revak both finished the game with four points while McCann and Maurice Kelly (three assists) had three points apiece.

Austin Jones picked up the loss in net, allowing 12 goals while playing all but 20 seconds of the game. Jones finished the game with 13 saves. Javon Felix led the team with seven ground balls and won 13 of 20 faceoffs.  Kyle Gartenmeyer had three caused turnovers.

Trailing 11-10 entering the fourth quarter, the Griffins and the Bobcats played defensive lacrosse for the first eleven minutes with neither team adding to their score.  Frostburg struck first at the 3:53 mark to go up 12-10 before the Griffins battled back.  Less than a minute later McCann took a pass from Zach Jastrzebski and shot it pass FSU goalie Kevin Reuther to close the deficit to one, 12-11.  Howell added a man-up goal at the 2:10 mark to tie the game at 12-12.  Frostburg came back on the offensive and scored the game-winner with 1:03 left in regulation.  The Griffins won the ensuing faceoff but turned the ball over in the final 40 seconds and Frostburg was able to clear it to preserve their win.

One period earlier Mike Smith and McCann opened the scorer for the Griffins to take a 10-6 lead with 11:30 left.  The Bobcats answered with five straight goals to take their first lead of the game at 11-10 going into the final period.

It was a different story in the first two quarters as the Griffins appeared in control of the contest, jumping out to an early 7-3 lead in the first quarter with Revak scoring Chestnut Hill's first two goals and Howell following with three of the next four as the Griffins opened up a 7-3 lead in the first 15 minutes of action.

The Bobcats cut it to 7-5  midway through the second quarter before Zachary Whalen's unassisted goal made the score 8-5.  Frostburg added a man-up goal in the final minute to close the gap to 8-6 at halftime.

The Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 when they host Molloy college at victory Field #1 in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.  First faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
