Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Howell Scores 100th Career Goal as Griffins Defeat Post to Remain Unbeaten in CACC Games

Senior J.R. Howell scored his 100th career goa on Sunday as the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team remained unbeaten in conference play, defeating Post University  13-7 at LaMoy field in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The Griffins improve to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Post falls to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Howell (East Meadow, N.Y.) entered the game needing one goal to reach the 100-goal milestone.  Taking advantage of a man-up situation, Howell drove and put the ball into the net at the 6:43 mark of the second period for his 100th score and a 6-1 Griffins lead.  With that goal, he becomes the only player in program history to reach 100 goals and 100 assists (104) for their career.   He is also just the fourth player in program history to score 100 career goals.

Two minutes later, and this time the Griffins were a man-down, Howell took a pass from Maurice Kelly (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) and scored his second goal of the game.  The man-down goal was just the 19th such goal scored in the 13-year history of the program.

Ben Revak (Aston, Pa.) led the Griffins, scoring five of their 13 goals and adding three assists for a total of eight points.  Liam McCann (Edmonton, Alberta) added three goals while Kelly had a goal and an assist.   Kyle Gartenmeyer (Holland, Pa.) had one caused turnover on the afternoon which gives him 27 on the season, tying the Chestnut Hill single season mark set back in 2012 by Thomas Carfagna.  Dan Grubb (Quakertown, Pa.) led the team with five caused turnovers and five ground balls.  Javon Felix (Nyack, N.Y. ) also had five ground balls and won seven of ten faceoffs over the course of the game.

Austin Jones (Courtice, Ontario) had a season high 20 saves in goal, earning the win and upping his record to 7-3 on the season.  Jones lowered his goals against average to a league best 8.70 per game, which is also the 12th best mark in NCAA division II this season.

Revak started the scoring with an unassisted goal just 3:23 into the game and added his second goal of the game with nine seconds left in the first quarter to put the Griffins up 4-0. Mike Smith (Center Valley, Pa.) and McCann had the Griffins' two goals in between Revak's pair.  After a Post goal at the 9:44 mark of the second quarter, Revak notched his third goal 36 seconds later, giving the Griffins a 5-1 lead. Revak's fourth tally came with 2:14 left in the half and upped the Griffins lead to 8-2.

McCann took over in the third quarter, scoring his second of the game with an assist from Revak and his second man-up goal just 1:53 into the period to make the score 9-2.  The McCann-Revak connection struck again at the 7:54 mark giving Chestnut Hill a 10-3 lead.   Revak added his fifth and final goal with 3:29 left in the quarter.

Post came back with two unanswered goals, one late in the third and one with 11:35 left to pull within five 11-6.  Zach Jastrzebski (Hackettstown, N.J.) scored at the 9:03 mark and Kelly added a man-up goal with 1:20 left  to round out the Chestnut Hill scoring.

The Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team travel to Delaware on Wednesday to face nationally ranked  Wilmington University.  First faceoff is at 4:00 p.m.
