Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Howell Becomes All-Time Points Leader as Griffins Fall in Overtime to Wildcats

Senior J.R. Howell became the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team's all-time points leader but a fourth quarter rally by the Griffins fell short as Wilmington University's Giovanni Marino found the net in overtime to give the Wildcats a 17-16 win and handing the team their first conference loss of the season.

The Griffins fall to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in CACC games.  The Wildcats, ranked #19 in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll, improve to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in league play.

The loss overshadowed the record breaking effort from senior J.R. Howell.  Howell entered the game needing three points to break Carson Rees' career record of 207 points.  Howell recorded four total points on two goals and two assists to give him 209 career points.    The senior's first goal of the game with 8:48 left in the second quarter tied Rees' record.  The all-time points record became Howell's alone when he assisted on Liam McCann's goal with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter.  Howell then added the game tying goal with just 41 seconds left to complete his four point effort.

McCann along with Ben Revak led the Griffins with three goals apiece.  The two players also had three assists apiece to finish with a team high six points.  Maurice Kelly, Jack Clyne and Zach Jastrzebski had two goals apiece.  McCann also became the second player in program history to score two man-down goals in the same season scoring the goal with 7:54 left in the second quarter.

The Wildcats led for most of the game but were never able to fully pull away, leading by no more than three goals at any time in the first half, only to have the Griffins come back.  Chestnut Hill was down 7-4 when they scored four straight goals as the second quarter wound down.  McCann's man-down goal pulled the Griffins within one with Clyne's first goal of the game tying the game at 7-7.   Revak's score with 2:11 left in the second quarter gave the Griffins their first lead of the game at 8-7.  Wilmington tied the game 41 seconds later as the teams headed into halftime deadlocked at 8-8.

Wilmington outscored the Griffins 5-2 in the third quarter to lead 13-10 heading into the final period.  Marino's goal just 49 seconds into the fourth quarter gave the Wildcats a 14-10 lead when the Griffins began a comeback to tie the game.   Kelly and Jastrzebski scored 16 seconds apart to pull the Griffins within two 14-12 with 9:42 left.  McCann added his third goal of the game with 6:22 left to close the gap to one 14-13 before the Wildcats scored again to go back up by two 15-13.  Revak scored his third goal of the game and Billy DiMaio added his first goal of the season to tie the game at 15-15 with 3:21 remaining.

The Wildcats again took the lead with a goal at the 2:12 mark before Howell tied the game again with 41 seconds left.  Wilmington won the faceoff and called timeout before Marino got a shot that Griffin goalkeeper Austin Jones made a great save on with 14 seconds left.  The Griffins cleared and Howell had a shot in the final seconds that was blocked, sending the game into overtime.  In overtime, Marino connected on his fourth goal of the game to give the Wildcats the win.

Jones finished the game with 15 saves.  Chase Snyder, Javon Felix and Dan Grubb had four ground balls apiece while Grubb and Connor O'Donnell led the Griffins with three caused turnovers apiece.

The Chestnut Hill Men's Lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 when they host Georgian Court University at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.  First faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
