Anthony Cancellare threw two touchdown passes as the Chestnut Hill college Sprint Football team completed their best season since 2019 with a 12-7 win over the University of Pennsylvania Friday night at UPenn's historic Franklin Field.
The Griffins finish their season at 5-2 with the win, equaling their best mark in program history. Penn also finishes their season at 5-2.
Cancellare threw for 164 yards, completing 18 of 26 passes with two touchdowns, accounting for over 80% of the Chestnut Hill offense on the night as Penn's defense effectively shut down the Griffins' solid running game. Cancellare also led the team with 26 yards rushing.
Kyree Griffin caught both touchdowns and finished the game with seven catches for 55 yards. Aiden Neff added four catches while Anthony Droege had three.
Lex Williams and Jonathan Havrilak led the team with seven tackles apiece. Cam Goldsmith and Amir Jenkins both recorded a sack on the night. Dimitri Laylor had the game's lone interception on the night.
Penn dominated the first quarter, holding the ball for over ten minutes before scoring the game's first touchdown with a five yard run from JT Goodman to make the score 7-0.
The Griffins responded with a dominant second quarter, culminating in an 18-play 80-yard drive that took up almost all of the final 11 minutes of the period. Cancellare completed the drive with a 13-yard pass to Griffin and the score with 15 seconds left in the half. Brady Reynolds kick was blocked as the Griffins went into the locker room at halftime trailing 7-6.
The Quakers produced their own long drive late in the third quarter, entering the red zone as time was expiring. The drive stalled as Jenkins sacked Quaker quarterback Michael Malone on a fourth down play giving the ball back to the Griffins on their own 24-yard line just eight seconds into the fourth period.
Cancellare and the CHC offense took over, driving 76 yards in 12 plays for the go-ahead score. Nasir Moore had a 10-yard reception to start the drive and Cancellare later added a 15 yard pass to Folley Tolley and two completions to Droege for 19 yards to bring the ball to the Quaker 22-yard line. After a couple of short runs, Cancellare found Neff for a nine yard game to bring up first and goal from the six. He then tossed a six yard gem to Griffin for the score. The two point conversion failed, and Chestnut Hill had a 12-7 lead with 7:51 left in the game.
Laylor intercepted a Malone pass on the Quakers next drive and after a three-and-out drive by the Griffins, the Chestnut Hill defense held the Quakers to negative yardage on their next possession, getting the ball back with 3:15 left where they proceeded to run out the clock to secure the win.
The win brought to a close a successful 2024 campaign for the sprint football team and head coach Gio Thomas. Â
