Watts Break School Record in 5,000-Meters; Watson Wins Discus at Ursinus Track and Field Festival

Sydney Watts etched her name again in the Chestnut Hill College Track and field record book with a solid performance in the 5,000 meter run as the Griffins' women's Track and field team concluded their two days on competition at the Ursinus College Track and Field Festival in Collegeville, Pennsylvania on Saturday.

In addition to Watts' performance Griffin athletes recorded two additional personal best marks and seven additional top 15 finishes including a first place effort from Anastasia Watson in the discus throw.

Watts raced to a fourth place finish in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 18:53.02 to break Makenzie Hooven's record on 19:12.27 seconds set back at the CACC championship meet in 2018.  The junior runner now holds both indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter records along with the indoor 3,000 meter mark and was part of the school's indoor record breaking 4x 800 meter relay team last season.

Watson cruised to a victory in the discus throw with a top toss of 34.47 meters (113'1"). The junior thrower also placed second in the shot put competition with a toss of 10.60 meters (34' 9½").

Staying with the field events, Erin McCarthy et a personal best mark in the javelin throw with a toss of 27.99 meters (91'10"), placing fourth overall.

Moving onto the track, Gabby Hassler placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 13:31.76 to round out the Griffin's personal best efforts.

Solanje James finished 11th in the 100 meter dash seeded race with a time of 13.84 seconds.  In the 1,500 meter race Aubrey Elias and Rebecca Dalton placed 13th and 15th respectively, rounding out the Griffins' top 15 finishers.  Elias had a time of 5:22.48 while Dalton crossed the finish line in 5:28.55.


The men's track and field team returns to action on Friday April 12, 2024, when the compete at the Steenson Invitational in Owings Mills, Maryland.
