Griffins Kickoff their 2024 Football Season with Win over Cougars

Lawrence Howard V ran for 86 yards and Anthony Cancellare threw four touchdown passes as the Chestnut Hill College Football team opened their season with a 28-6 win over Caldwell University Friday night at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

Howard carried the ball 26 times  on the night, running for a game high 84 yards.  Xavier Limehouse added 41 yards as the Griffins rushed for 158 yards on the night.

Cancellare connected on 15 of 30 passes for 110 yards while throwing four touchdowns to four different receivers.  Kyree Griffin, Xavier Hendricks and Anthony Droege had three catches apiece.

On the defensive end, the Griffins held the Cougars to just 26 yards on the ground and 174 yards in the air.  Jonathan Havrilak led the defensive unit with seven tackles including three for loss of yards.  Trevon Hodnett and Lex Williams had five tackles apiece. Five different players broke up passes with Jake Bosken recording a sack and Amir Jenkins and interception.

Chestnut Hill took their opening drive 64 yards to take an early 7-0 lead, using nearly half of the first quarter.  Miles Coates caught the first of Cancellare's four touchdown tosses  and Brady Reynolds followed with the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Caldwell's first possession ended quickly with just five plays before turning the ball over on downs.  The Griffins used just six plays to score their second touchdown in as many possessions. Cancellare connected with Griffins on the final two plays of the drive, including an 18-yard catch for the touchdown, giving the Griffins a 14-0 lead after Reynolds' PAT.

Another three-and-out for the Cougars gave the Griffins the ball on their own 19 yard line as time was running out in the first quarter.  Chestnut Hill proceeded to produce their longest drive of the night, both in distance and time consumed, running 16 plays for 81 yards in 9:21.   Cancellare threw his second touchdown of the night, this one a short four yard pass to Kindrik Branch for the score and a 21-0 lead with 6:19 in the half.

Caldwell got on the board on their next possession with Cougar quarterback Anthony Haines tossing a 58 yard throw to Arjun Petgrave  for the score.  The two-point conversion failed, and the Griffins lead was cut to 21-6 where it remained until halftime.

Defense took over in the third quarter with both teams holding the other to under 30 yards of offense in the period.   On Caldwell's first possession of the fourth quarter, the Griffins defense sacked quarterback Josh Smith and two possessions later Smith fumbled the ball and Williams recovered for the Griffins on the Cougar ten-yard line.   Three plays later Cancellare found Coates in the end zone for the Griffins final score and a 28-6 lead.  For Coates it was his second touchdown recpetion of the game.

The Griffins used the ground game on their remaining possession to eat up the clock with the Cougars launching one last effort in the final two minutes which fell short as time expired.

Haines threw for 106 yard to lead the Cougars with Petgrave making four catches for 93 yards.

The sprint football team returns to action on Friday, September 27 when they travel to face Army-West Point in West Point, New York.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
