Limehouse, Cancellare Star as Griffins Dominate Cornell for Second Win of Season

Xavier Limehouse ran for 172 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Chestnut Hill College Sprint Football team turned in a dominant effort against Cornell University, defeating the Big Red, 34-12 at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, New York.

The Griffins improve to 2-1 on the season while Cornell falls to 0-3.

Limehouse scored the Griffins first three touchdowns as Chestnut Hill jumped out to a 20-0 lead at halftime.  His three touchdowns tied a school record for most touchdowns in a game and most rushing touchdowns in a game.  The sophomore running back's 172 yards rushing are the most by a Griffin player this season.

Quarterback Anthony Cancellare threw for 164 yards and two touchdowns, both to Winday Dawson who caught three passes for 90 yards to lead the Griffin receivers.  Cancellare completed eight of 11 passes on the night.

On the defensive front, Cam Goldsmith had nine tackles including 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.  He also recovered a fumble.  Torey Moore led the team with 11 tackles on the night.

Special Teams set the tone for the game early as Matt Viereck recovered a fumble from a Cornell punt return on the first possession of the game, putting the Griffins in prime position to score as the team started their drive just ten yards from the end zone.  One play later Limehouse ran the ball in for a touchdown.  Brady Reynolds' extra point attempt was blocked.

The Griffin defense forced two straight three-and-out possessions from Cornell and needed just three plays to score their second touchdown of the game as the second quarter began.  Cancellare found Miles Coates for a 46 yard reception as the opening quarter ended and Limehouse opened the second quarter with a six yard touchdown run to give the Griffins a 13-0 lead.

In the Griffins final possession of the first half, Limehouse carried the ball six times, racking up 49 yards and scoring his third touchdown from one yard out with 23 seconds left, giving CHC  a 20-0 lead.

Scott Campbell forced a fumble on Cornell's second possession of the third quarter and Goldsmith recovered the loose ball, setting up another drive for a touchdown.  This drive belonged to the receivers as Cancellare was a perfect 3-for-3 on the drive, connecting with Aiden Neff for ten yards and then two passes to Dawson, the first for 19 yard and the second for 35 yards and a touchdown and a 27-0 lead.

Dawson caught his second touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, a 36-yard catch three plays into Chestnut Hill's second drive of the final period, upping the Griffins lead to 34-0.

Cornell finally scored in the latter stages of the final quarter, producing a 10-play 65 yard drive to make the score 34-6 with 6:02 left  and an 11-play 89-yard drive with one second left to make the final score 34-12.

The sprint football team returns to action on Saturday, October 11, 2025 when the host Molloy University at AA Garthwaite Field.  Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
