The Chestnut Hill College Sprint Football team held their final home game of the 2025 season Saturday evening at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium, but the result was not what the team had hoped for as Mansfield University handed the Griffins a 32-21 loss.
The loss dropped the Griffins record to 4-3 overall while the Mountaineers improve to 5-1.
Prior to the game, the Griffins honored eight players who were playing in their final home game as Griffins:Â wide receiver Kyree Griffin, quarterback Anthony Cancellare, linebackers Cam Goldsmith and Lex Williams, defensive lineman Jonathan Havrilak, tight end Miles Coates, cornerback Justin Oppong, and offensive lineman Ced Brown. All eight players have been an integral part of the team's success over the past seasons, and the ceremony highlighted their athletic accomplishments as well as their accomplishments in the classroom.
Cancellare completed 16 of 21 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns. His 160 yards passing brings his season total to 1,556, a new single season mark for the Griffins. Cancellare also established a single season mark for total offense with his effort on Saturday, finishing the game with 134 yards of total offense (passing/rushing) to give him 1,581 yard on the season.
Williams was one of the Griffins few bright spots on defense Saturday night, recording 13 tackles to become the program's all-time leader with 213 for his career. His 13 tackles gave him 60 for the season (32 solo, 28 assisted), establishing new single season marks for assisted tackles and total tackles.
Goldsmith had 11 tackles and added a quarterback hurry- his second of the season, tying a single season mark for the program.
Back on offense , Griffin had five catches for 52 yards while Aiden Neff led the team with six catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Xavier Limehouse ran for 73 yards and a touchdown, his ninth of the season (eight rushing, one receiving). The nine touchdowns on the season break the old record of eight set last season. It also give him 54 points on the season, also a new program record. Limehouse's 73 yards rushing and 19 yards from receiving also give him 812 all-purpose yards (rushing, receiving, returns), another single season mark.
Back to the game, the Griffins got on the board first as Cancellare found Neff for a nine-yard touchdown pass on their first possession of the game to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Mountaineers countered with a touchdown drive of their own on their first possession to even the score at 7-7.Â
Chestnut Hill's second possession took over seven minutes but had the same result as Cancellare again connected with Neff, this time from five yards out to give the Griffins a 14-7 lead with 11:21 left in the second quarter.
Mansfield took to the ground for their next possession as they did throughout most of the game, running 60 yards before coughing up the ball on a fumble recovered by Amir Jenkins on the Griffins own 15 yard line.
Two penalties set the Griffins back deep in their own zone to the six yard line before Cancellare was sacked in the end zone for a safety, cutting their lead to 14-9. The Mountaineers scored again after the safety and tried for a two point conversion which failed but the visitors still led 15-14 going into halftime.
The Mountaineers opened the second half with a 27-yard field goal to extend their lead to 18-14 before the Griffins scored on their first possession of the third quarter.
Folley Tarley carried the ball twice for 24 yards to open the drive. After a short gain from Limehouse on the ground. Cancellare connected with Neff for 13 yards before Limehouse carried the ball four times for the final 20 yards, scoring a touchdown form one yard out on the last play. Brady Reynolds added the point after touchdown kick to give the Griffins a 21-18 lead as the third quarter was ending.
Mansfield added two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter running the ball for 171 yards on three fourth quarter possessions to make the final score 32-21.
The Griffins' defense struggled with the Mansfield running game, giving up 331 yards rushing and 443 yards of total offense while only producing 247 yards of offense themselves.Â
The sprint football team will conclude their season with a game at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday November 14, 2025. Â Â Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.
