ITA Play Garners Shcherbakova an Honorable Mention on CACC Weekly Report

New Haven, Conn. – (9/12/2012) – For her exceptional play in the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships, senior Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) was selected as an honorable mention for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week award. Shcherbakova was the final Griffin remaining in the tournament as she challenged New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) graduate student, Nelly Ciolkowski (Neuilly-Plaisance, France) in the Women’s A Singles Semifinals.

Shcherbakova fought hard to put Chestnut Hill College (6-1, 4-1) in the Women’s A Singles Draw’s Final, but she unfortunately fell on the wrong side of a 6-1, 6-1 final. Shcherbakova came to play in her third ITA Tournament as a Griffin, scoring three victories in the first two days of the Women's A Draw. The Griffin senior won 6-4, 6-2, over Bentley University freshman Ludmila Yamus (Deer Park, N.Y.), 6-3, 6-2 over Concordia College (NY) senior Yuliya Plevako (Astana, Kazakhstan), and 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) over Southern New Hampshire University sophomore Diana Vemvakitis (Wading River N.Y.) to align for a semifinal match Ciolkowski, who eventually went on to defeat her teammate, senior Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain) 6-0, 6-4 in the Women’s A Singles Championship.

Shcherbakova also scored a 6-0, 6-0 win at number two singles and team with junior Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) for an 8-4 win at number one doubles in the Griffins 8-1 win over Merrimack College on Friday, September 21. Shcherbakova is unbeaten in singles play this year, sporting a 7-0 record between number one (2-0) and number two singles (5-0). In doubles, she has teamed with Dennis for a 6-1 mark.

The women's tennis team continues their CACC schedule at Goldey-Beacom College with a 3:00 p.m. contest on Friday, September 28.
