Veazey’s Career Performance and Shutout Garner Honorable Mention on CACC Weekly Report

New Haven, Conn. – (10/10/2012) – Recording a career-high 18 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss at Dowling College on Tuesday, October 2, and earning a shutout in Chestnut Hill College’s 1-0 defeat of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival, Felician College on Saturday, October 6, senior goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, Del.) earned an honorable mention for the league’s Women’s Soccer Player of the Week award.

At Dowling College, the Golden Lions peppered Veazey for 90 minutes of regulation and only found success on a rebound in the 50th minute. After a scoreless opening half, the Golden Lions continued to pressure the Chestnut Hill College (5-7, 5-2) defense in the second half. At 49:03, a shot from sophomore forward Lindsey Thompson (Centereach, N.Y.) rebounded off Veazey to the finishing head of senior forward Kristy Vitale (Shirley, N.Y.), 1-0. Despite a 38-4 shot deficit, the Griffins managed to tie the affair in the 63rd minute (62:30) when junior midfielder Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville, N.J.) scored off a corner kick scramble in front of the Golden Lion goal, 1-1. The score remained knotted until the end of regulation and overtime ensued. After taking 37 shots in regulation, it was the Golden Lions first of overtime that broke the Griffins back. It came at 90:48 as junior midfielder Alexandria Abruzzo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) centered the ball to Mueger, who scored it to the right corner of the Griffin goal from eight yards out, 2-1. Veazey recorded a career-high 18 saves in the loss.

Chestnut Hill College dictated play against Felician College with every turn. After an initial charge, the Griffins threatened the Golden Falcon goal again at the 16-minute mark. This time, a header from sophomore midfielder Lauren Nolte (Wilmington, Del.) was blocked by a Golden Falcon defender only to be buried in the back of the goal by senior midfielder Alexandria Allizzo (Laurel Springs, N.J.0), 1-0 (16:01). Play remained under the Griffins control for the duration of the contest, allowing the home team to win their second straight CACC game in shutout fashion. Veazey totaled four saves for her second shutout of the season.

The women's soccer team continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, September 13, with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Post University.
