CACC Recognizes DePalma and Biro With Honorable Mentions on Weekly Reports

New Haven, Conn. – (10/15/2012) – In the midst a recent losing streak, the Chestnut Hill College women’s volleyball team put together a 1-2 week to break up the skid and earn their third Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win of the season. Junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.) and freshman middle hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) were the Griffins top contributors this week, as each earned an honorable mention on the CACC Weekly Report.

Garnering an honorable mention for the CACC Player of the Week award, DePalma recorded two double-double performances, including a 16-kill, ten-dig showing in a 3-1 win at Goldey-Beacom College on Thursday, October 11. Sophomore outside hitter Kadi McCoy (Dallastown, Pa.) and the Lightning offense struck first on their home court and took the opening set 25-19. However, a cohesive Chestnut Hill College (7-15, 3-8) responded in the second set, leading the Lightning a majority of the frame and putting them away 28-26. The Griffins took the third set with defense, holding the Lightning to a .000 (8K-8E-35TA) hitting percentage and making five team blocks, 25-15. The fourth set was tight the whole way but after a 24-24 tie a Lighting miscue and a finishing kill from junior middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.) brought the set to a close 26-24. DePalma’s 26 kills led the Griffins while a slightly more efficient Biro was close behind with 15 kills on a .265 (15K-6E-34TA) hitting percentage. They both pitched in on defense as well; DePalma completed her fifth double-double of the season with ten digs while also making four blocks, and Biro hustled to three blocks.

DePalma also gave a double-double performance against Georgian Court University on Tuesday, October 9, adding an ace and two blocks to 13 kills and 16 digs. She had five kills, ten digs, and two blocks at Post University on Saturday, October 13. Biro had nine kills and two block against the Eagles. She had eight kills and four blocks against the Lions.

The women’s volleyball team remains on the road as they continue their CACC schedule with a 7:00 p.m. match at the University of the Sciences on Wednesday, October 17.
