DiGiovanni Named CACC Rookie of the Week;
Veazey Recognized with Honorable Mention
 
New Haven, CT – (9/8/2010) – Freshman midfielder Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville, NJ) netted a goal and an assist in the home opener against Millersville University, leading Chestnut Hill College to victory an earning herself the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week title for the week ending on September 5. Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, DE) was an honorable mention for the Player of the Week Award after recording 11 saves and a shutout in a 1-1 week.
 
Chestnut Hill College (1-1) took the advantage on the very first shot of Saturday’s home opener. DiGiovanni drove the ball down the center of the pitch and located freshman forward Marykate McShane (Lebanon, PA), who struck the ball for a 1-0 lead, just 2:47 after the opening horn. She later scored herself by completing a second-half penalty opportunity. Freshman midfielder Kaelyn Pizarro (Berlin, NJ) drew a foul before casting a shot on goal and DiGiovanni put the awarded penalty kick to goal for the 2-0 advantage. The Griffins held that margin to victory thanks to the goaltending of Veazey.
 
Veazey totaled 11 saves through two contests. She made three saves in the shutout of Millersville University on Saturday, September 4, and eight in a 2-0 loss to West Chester University on September 2. She faced 29 total shots and currently has a .846 save percentage. Veazey finished among the CACC’s top five keepers in goals-against-average (1.51, 5th), saves (105, 5th), and shutouts (3, 5th) as a freshman.
 
The women’s soccer team travels to Bloomsburg University for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday, September 8.
