Leckonby Honored Again for Strong Start

New Haven, Conn. - (3/24/2015) – Freshman midfielder Hunter Leckonby (Charleston, S.C.) of the Chestnut Hill College women’s lacrosse team turned in another stellar stretch of games last week, continuing her impressive start to her collegiate career and making her second consecutive appearance on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report. Leckonby netted 10 goals to go with six ground balls, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls during an 0-3 week for the Griffins, landing an Honor Roll mention after being named Rookie of the Week in the previous report.

Leckonby began the week with a two-goal effort in an 11-7 setback at Shippensburg University on Tuesday, March 17. Unassisted tallies from Leckonby and fellow freshman midfielder Julia Galantich (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) put Chestnut Hill College in the driver's seat early, 2-0 at 19:26. Shippensburg University (2-3) got on the scoreboard a little more than two minutes later, 2-1 at 17:05, and as play approached the 13-minute mark (13:13) the Griffins reestablished their two-goal advantage on a connection between sophomore attack Samantha Herron (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and Leckonby, 3-1. An exchange of goals kept the Griffins ahead 7-5 with 25:36 left to play, but that is when things went sour for the pride. The Raiders rattled off the last six scores of the game en route to an 11-7 win.

Leckonby and sophomore midfielder Rachel Perry (Gilbertsville, Pa.) took turns scoring the contest's last six scores over the final 15 minutes (14:34), but the late Chestnut Hill College rally would not be enough to snare the Lions as Molloy College preserved a 15-10 victory on Friday, March 19. Leckonby scored six goals in all, while also recording three ground balls and a draw control.

Five consecutive Lion goals separated the home team for a 6-1 advantage before Leckonby scored her first tally at 20:23, 6-2. Unfortunately, the Lions resumed their scoring ways, depositing four more goals before Leckonby interrupted the streak with the first of her two free position goals coming at 11:58, 10-3. The Lions continued on for a 13-3 halftime advantage and they expanded the deficit to 11 goals, 15-4, just before the 19-minute mark (19:19) of the second half. Leckonby rallied the Griffin pride over the remaining time, scoring two unassisted goals before Perry got in on the act (15-6 at 13:19). She exchanged strikes with Leckonby over the final eight minutes, but the rally would fall shy of its intended result, leaving the Griffins on the short end of a 15-10 final.

Another three-game week ended on Sunday, March 22, with a trip to Shepherd University, where What began as a competitive matchup eventually fell in the home team's favor as Chestnut Hill College (2-4) lost ground on an 8-5 halftime deficit to leave Shepherd University defeated by a 20-9 final. Leckonby tallied both of her goals in the first half, the second pulling the Griffins to within three, 8-5, at intermission, and also grabbed two ground balls and caused a turnover.

Through her first six contests, Leckonby leads the team in goals (17, T-4th CACC), points (18, 7th CACC), shots (32), shot percentage (.531), and free-position goals (3) while ranking fifth in ground balls (9) and caused turnovers (4).

Chestnut Hill College looks to snap a three-game skid when it opens CACC play at Wilmington University (Del.) with a 4:00 p.m. opening draw on Wednesday, March 25.
