Baldwin Lures CSFL Defensive Player of the Week Award With Linebacker Play Versus Ravens

West Point, N.Y. - (11/1/2016) – Sophomore linebacker Jonathan Baldwin (Charlotte, N.C.) headlined the Chestnut Hill College defense versus Franklin Pierce University, recording a team-high 16 tackles (5 solo, 11 assisted) – three for a loss – and garnering himself the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) Defensive Player of the Week award. Baldwin is the second Griffin to appear on the league’s weekly report as freshman quarterback Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) was recognized as the CSFL Offensive Player of the Week on October 4 after rushing for 17 yards and completing 21-for-38 (55.2 %) passes for 272 yards in a 29-24 home victory over Cornell University.

Stout defense dominated Saturday’s, October 29, CSFL affair in Rindge, New Hampshire. After trading safeties in the first half, Chestnut Hill College used a one-yard pass to sophomore Raevon Floyd-Bennett (Union City, N.J.) to gain an 8-2 third-quarter lead over Franklin Pierce University. But the contest ended with disappointment as the Ravens scored on the last play from scrimmage for a 14-8 victory.

Following intermission, a Raven’s third-quarter drive that ended with a punt to the 50-yard line (8:11). The ensuing Scarlet and Gold series included a three-yard pass to junior Kadeem Pankey (Easton, Pa.) and a 30-yard pass to Floyd-Bennett that brought the Griffins to the Raven two-yard line. A pair of Baldwin rushes only moved the ball to the one-yard line, requiring Marino to locate Floyd-Bennett for the Griffin touchdown (8-2 at 5:14).

A clutch Pankey interception allowed Chestnut Hill College to keep that lead for the fourth quarter. But there, a successful Ravens’ series tied the contest at 8-8 with 7:42 remaining. A trade of fruitless drives left the game on the line with 30 seconds (0:03) to play. After an incomplete pass, a 19-yard Raven rush brought the ball to the Chestnut Hill College 49-yard line. Then, an eight-yard pass advanced the ball to the 39-yard line with just six seconds (0:06) remaining on the scoreboard. That would be enough time for junior quarterback Jose Melo (Greenwich, Conn.) to hit freshman running back Ahzir Turner (Schenectady, N.Y.) for the game-winning touchdown, 14-8.

In addition to his defense, Baldwin's 27 yards of rushing led the Griffin ground attack. Baldwin currently ranks second on the Chestnut Hill College defense for tackles (37), recording 16 with help and 21 on his own accord. Six of those tackles have been recorded behind the opponents’ line of scrimmage, resulting in a loss of 13 yards.

The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team returns to the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium on Saturday, November 5, when they conclude their 2016 season with a noon (12:00 p.m.) contest against Mansfield University.
