Awl Earns CACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll Accolades

New Haven, Conn. - (1/27/2018) – Junior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) offered a stellar second half performance to Chestnut Hill College’s 89-69 victory at Concordia College (NY) on Saturday, January 27, earning him his second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll of the season. Awl was named a member of the CACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Honor Roll on December 18 – the first such appearance of his collegiate career – after recording a career-high, 10 (10-of-20, .500) field goals in a 26-point effort at Shepherd University on Saturday, December 16.

The Griffins dramatic journey through their CACC schedule continued on Tuesday (January 24) night as Chestnut Hill College (3-16, 2-10) welcomed cross-city rival, Jefferson University (13-9, 8-3) to Sorgenti Arena for some highly-competitive league action. The Scarlet and Gold led the Rams as late as 5:50 (67-65) in the second half and tied them four times in the final five minutes, before landing on the short side of a 78-75 final. The three-point spread was settled by an untimely foul that put senior guard Kaison Randolph (Trenton, N.J.) at the free throw line for the deciding points. Five Griffins finished in double figures; junior forward Tony Toplyn Jr. (Sicklerville, N.J.) led the group with 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal, but it was Awl who took over down the stretch. He scored eight of his 14 points in the final 10 minutes and finished the game with six rebounds and an assist.

On Saturday, January 27, senior center Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.) and freshman guard Rich Dean Jr. (Bensalem, Pa.) established Chestnut Hill College a 39-31 halftime lead over Concordia College (NY). But in the end it was the backcourt combination of senior Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Awl that earned the Griffins their second CACC win of the season, 89-69. Awl scored 20 of his team-high 23 points in the second half, hitting four threes (4-of-5, .800) in a 5-of-7 (.714) shooting effort that came with a perfect 6-of-6 showing at the free throw line and six rebounds. He finished 5-of-7 (.714) from three and 6-of-9 (.667) from the floor to average 18.5 points-per-game in a 1-1 week of play for Chestnut Hill College.

The Chestnut Hill College men’s basketball team continues their CACC schedule on Tuesday, January 30, with an 8:00 p.m. contest at Goldey-Beacom College.
