Philadelphia, PA – (11/16/2009) – Opening their 2009-2010 season schedule, the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team hosted Bloomsburg University in the first game of this evening's doubleheader at Sorgenti Arena. The Griffins struggled to generate an early offensive flow as the Huskies took advantage for a 39-19 halftime lead. The Huskies continued to control the affair in the second half producing a 67-45 final.
Chestnut Hill College (0-1) and Bloomsburg University (1-0) were tied, 5-5, after the opening five minutes of the contest, but the Huskies quickly took advantage of a lackluster Griffin offense. The Griffins shot 23.1% (6-of-26) from the field in the first half, and the Huskies forced 14 turnovers putting the Griffins behind a 39-19 at halftime deficit. Freshman guard Dana Wieller (Bethlehem, Pa.) powered the Huskies through the opening stanza with 15 points on 6-of-8 (75.0%) shooting, including three trifectas.
After the break the Huskies quickly extended their lead to 24, 43-19, however the Griffins whittled that margin to 13, 44-31, by 15:31. The Huskies responded over the next two minutes with a run of their own, pushing their lead back to 20, 51-31. From that point on, their advantage never went under 15 (56-41 at 6:30) as the Huskies continued on to a 67-45 victory. Wieller finished as their top scorer, leading all participants with 18 points. Sophomore guard Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) totaled 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman guard Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland, Pa.) fueled the Husky offense with nine assists.
Off the bench, freshman guard Ericka Furrowh(New Castle, Del.) finished the Griffins' leading scorer. She totaled 13 points, nine coming in the second half. Senior forward Davina Yacab (Patterson, NJ )and junior guard Jessica Pruiti (Old Bridge, NJ )led the Griffins on glass with six boards apiece.
The women's basketball team will open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule when they welcome Philadelphia University to campus on Wednesday, November 18. The contest is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
