Lions Outlast Griffins With Stellar Showing From the Charity Stripe

Lakewood, NJ – (12/10/2009) – Chestnut Hill College held Georgian Court University to a 25.0% (17-of-68) shooting percentage in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, but the Lions made good use of their numerous free throw opportunities. The Lions converted 39-of-48 (81.3%) from the charity stripe en route to a 77-70 overtime victory. Senior guard Dee Varley (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) scored 11 points in the overtime period alone and led the Lions parade to the free throw line hitting 12-of-14 (85.7%) penalty shots.

Freshman guard Shawna Wert (Sewell, N.J.) led Georgian Court University (2-5, 1-0) back from a 35-23 halftime deficit. The Lions were aggressive to the hoop earning 20, second-half free throws. They made 16 of their free chances (16-of-20, 80.0%) to force overtime. Varley took over in the extra frame, scoring 11 points and hitting 4-of-4 (100.0%) from the line. She finished the contest with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Shawna Wert totaled 23 points and was 9-of-10 (90.0%) from the line. She also made four steals. Her sister, freshman guard Dana Wert (Sewell, N.J.) was a factor as well with 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists. She also scored nine of her points from the free throw line (9-of-12, 75.0%).

Freshman forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA ) gave her best effort to date with 24 points, nine rebounds, a block, and a steal. Junior guard Jessica Pruiti (Old Bridge, NJ ) led the Griffins on the glass with ten rebounds. Senior forward Davina Yacab (Patterson, NJ ) and freshman guard Asha Jones (New Castle, DE ) were solid off the bench for Chestnut Hill College (0-7). Yacab totaled ten points and eight rebounds while Jones supplied five assists.

The women's basketball team continues their CACC schedule when Goldey-Beacom College comes to campus on Saturday, December 12. The contest is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
