Philadelphia, PA – (12/12/2009) – Chestnut Hill College grabbed their first win of the season this afternoon and gained a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory in the process, defeating Goldey-Beacom College 60-54. In what was an even, but messy affair, the Griffins outlasted a late Lightning run that brought the visitors within two, 56-54, after trailing by as many as 14, 49-35, in the second half.
60 turnovers in all, but Chestnut Hill College (1-8, 1-2) held a slight advantage in three-point shooting (30.8% - 20.0%) and free throws (66.7% - 52.0%) helping to preserve the victory. The combatants were within five points through most of the first half, however, the Griffins managed to separate for a 26-19 halftime lead on the aggressive play of senior forward
Chanta'l Hardy (Philadelphia, PA ). Hardy and freshman forward
Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA ) led the Griffins with six points apiece in the opening period. Sophomore guard
Jacinda Jones (Claymont, Del.) totaled seven points for Goldey-Beacom College (1-6, 0-3). The Griffins defense continued to give the Lightning trouble in the beginning of the second half, as Chestnut Hill College extended their advantage to 49-35 with 7:37 remaining. Jones rallied the Lightning for a final attempt on the Griffins' lead, but the push came too late, as the Griffins survived for a six-point win.
Jones led all scorers with 24 points. She was complimented by freshman guard
Devonne Richardson (Baltimore, Md.), who directed the Lightning with seven assists while also leading in rebounds with 15.
Freshman guard
Yelissa Boyer (Lancaster, Pa.) was the top scorer for the Griffins finishing with 15 points. She scored ten in the second half. Hardy and Alexander both recorded ten points. Hardy also hustled to nine rebounds. Junior guard
Jessica Pruiti (Old Bridge, NJ ) controlled the points for four assists and she also tied Boyer with four steals as the Griffins teamed for 16 steals on defense.
The women's basketball team will host St. Thomas Aquinas College in their final contest of 2009. The contest is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, December 19.
