New Castle, DE – (1/26/2010) – Chestnut Hill College stayed with Wilmington University for the opening 12 minutes, but the Wildcats closed the first half with a 23-6 run before claiming a 67-42 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win over the Griffins. Senior forward
Amelia Simmons (Wilmington, Del.) was dominate with 26 points and 12 rebounds while freshman forward
Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA )and senior forward
Chanta'l Hardy (Philadelphia, PA )led the Griffins with eight points apiece.
The conference opponents did not separate by more than five points in the opening eight minutes, but with 7:54 left in the first half Wilmington University (7-9, 4-4) forged ahead behind Simmons' impressive play. Simmons scored 14 points and collected six rebounds in the period, leading the Wildcats to a 39-21 lead. The margin grew to 27, 50-23, early in the second half (16:46) as Chestnut Hill College (2-14, 1-7) only shot 26.7% (8-of-30) in the frame. With 2:20 remaining the lead hit 29, 67-38, before the Griffins closed the affair with a 6-0 run.
Simmons was 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the field and 7-of-8 (87.5%) from the charity stripe helping the Wildcats to a 50.0% (23-of-46) team shooting performance. Her dozen rebounds led the Wildcats to a 43-35 advantage on the glass.
Alexander and Hardy tied for the Griffins' high score with eight points apiece. Hardy also grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore forward
Ashlen Staybrook (Pickerington, OH )led the Griffins with six rebounds, she also scored six points. Senior guard
Carley Glass (Swedesboro, NJ )contributed with six assists and four steals.
The women's basketball team returns home to host Georgian Court University in a 7:00 p.m. CACC contest on Thursday, January 28.
