Tiger Second Half Sinks Griffins

Philadelphia, PA – (1/7/2010) – Chestnut Hill College trailed Holy Family University by only nine at halftime, 39-30, but a suffocating defense allowed the Tigers to distance from the Griffins in the second half for a 74-46, Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory. The Tigers controlled the second half with a revived defensive focus and diligent effort on the offensive glass. Sophomore forward Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA ) led the Griffins first-half effort with 14 points in the period; she finished with a season-high 16 points.

The Tigers won the battle in the paint, as forwards, junior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J.) and senior Christine McCollum (Abington, Pa.) traded halves leading Holy Family University (12-1, 5-0). Carr scored 14 of her 19 points in the opening half and McCollum closed with ten of her 18 points in the second half. McCollum added eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and three steals to her evening while McCollum finished with seven rebounds, four blocks and her 1,000th career point.

Smith and senior forward Chanta'l Hardy (Philadelphia, PA ) kept the Griffins in the opening frame, but Chestnut Hill College (2-10, 1-3) was 7-of-33 (21.2%) from floor in the second half and collapsed behind a 50-35 rebounding deficit. Smith's 16 points led the Griffins and Hardy added ten points, eight of her points came in the first stanza. Junior guard Jessica Pruiti (Old Bridge, NJ ) hustled for six rebounds to lead the Griffins on the glass, she also score seven points.

The women's basketball team continues their CACC schedule with a trip to Bloomfield College on Saturday, January 9, for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
