Bloomsburg, PA – (11/20/2010) – Second-half defense helped Bloomsburg University separate from Chestnut Hill College, as the Huskies quickly expanded a 37-32 halftime lead into a 22-point advantage as with 14:45 still to play. The Griffins trimmed the margin to ten, 58-48, midway through the period, but the Huskies closed out the battle with a 78-61 final.
A 48.0% (12-for-25) first-half shooting percentage allowed Chestnut Hill College (2-1) to keep pace with Bloomsburg University (2-0) in the early going. The Griffins led off the opening tip, but with 7:00 to left in the half the Huskies took control and they carried a 37-32 to the break. The Huskies defensive intensity escalated in the second half and their five-point lead ballooned to as many as 22 points, 54-32, as the Griffins turnovers (25) and second-half shooting percentage (26.5%, 9-for-34) began to take effect. Midway through the closing half, junior guard Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA) and sophomore forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) helped the Griffins worked the deficit down to ten, 58-48, only to have the Huskies end the contest on a 17-point margin.
Five Huskies finished in double figures with sophomore guard Dana Wieller (Bethlehem, PA) leading the way. Wieller totaled 20 points on 7-for-16 (43.8%) shooting, including three baskets from long range. Junior Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg, PA) was one of three Huskies with 12 points, she also totaled nine rebounds, a block, and two steals in the contest. Sophomore guard Lauren Ellis (Bangor, PA) chipped in with 14 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.
Senior center Cecelia Herald (Gaithersburg, MD) led the Griffins with 12 points, five rebounds, a block, and two steals. Sophomore guard Marqesah Spicer (Philadelphia, PA) added 11 points and junior forward Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA) grabbed nine rebounds while scoring six points.
The women's basketball team returns home to host C.W. Post University in a 3:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, November 24.
