Bronxville, NY – (2/20/2010) – The Clippers jumped out to the early advantage in the first ever meeting between Chestnut Hill College and new Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) member, Concordia College. The Clippers held a 29-20 lead at halftime on a balanced team shooting performance. It was enough to outlast the Griffins who could only match Concordia College's production in the second half, as the Clippers won 73-64.
Shooting 50.0% (13-of-26) from the field, Concordia College (7-18, 7-9) posted a 12-point lead, 19-7, with 8:18 still to play in the opening half. The Griffins cut the margin down to single digits (19-11 @ 7:29) eventually, but with a 25.8% (8-of-31) team shooting performance in the period Chestnut Hill College fell behind a 29-20 halftime deficit. Graduate forward Larz Jeter (Philadelphia, PA) carried the Griffins in the period with 12 points. Following the break, the Clippers pushed their lead to 20, 47-27, by 13:47 on the effort of freshman forward Argelix Gil (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Sophomore forward Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA) sparked the Griffins' last strike as they cut the margin back to six, 54-48 with 5:32 still to play. Senior guard Kenny Gaskins (Bronx, N.Y.) closed out the contest from the line, hitting all necessary free throws to hold on the Griffins in a 73-64 win.
Gil led the Clippers with 19 points, he was 8-of-14 (57.1%) from the field and 3-of-6 (50.0%) at the line. Gaskins commanded the Clippers, adding seven assists to 15 points and nine rebounds, while junior forward Williams Eason (Springfield, Ma.) enforced the paint with 13 rebounds, seven blocks, and ten points. Freshmen guards Brandon Whitaker (Harlem, N.Y.) and Douglas Soutar (Hartford, Conn.) chipped in 11 points and ten points, respectively.
Freshman guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ) scored all 18 of his points in eight minutes of second-half play. He missed his only shot of the opening half, but he made the most of his time in the closing period finishing 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the floor and 2-of-2 (100.0%) at the free throw line. Jeter finished with 14 points and led the Chestnut Hill College (10-14, 6-9) defensive effort with three steals. Comas recorded his ninth double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
The men's basketball team heads to the University of the Sciences on Sunday, February 21, for a 4:00 p.m. CACC contest.
