Herald and Team Rebounding Carry Griffins Over Clippers

Bronxville, NY – (2/20/2010) – The Griffins crashed the boards against Concordia College to overcome the Clippers' aggressive defense and superior shooting. Chestnut Hill College owned a 37-31 halftime lead using a 21-8 advantage on the glass to off-set the Clippers' 55.0% (11-of-20) shooting. Despite 29 turnovers, the Griffins 45-26 rebounding edge produced a 64-59 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory. Junior center Cecelia Herald (Gaithersburg, MD ) led the Griffins on both ends of the floor with 18 points, two blocks, and a steal.

Chestnut Hill College (5-20, 4-13) sized the early advantage posting a 19-3 lead on 5:31 into the affair. Concordia College (1-23, 1-15) worked the deficit to nine, 27-18, on the versatile play of senior forward Shari Cordero (Bronx, N.Y.). The Clippers were able to keep the pressure onto halftime, limiting the Griffins' lead to six, 37-31, at the break. In the second half, Herald and freshman guard Latoya Laing (Snelville, GA ) helped the Griffins extend the margin to 13, 55-42, before a second defensive stand around the eight-minute mark brought the Clippers back within ten, 55-46. Cordero and fellow senior forward Gianna Zonghetti (Garrison, N.Y.) inspired the fleeting assault. Defensively, they combined for three blocks and seven steals. Cordero totaled ten points and seven rebounds additionally.

Junior guard Shelly Monahan (Exeter, R.I.) was the Clippers' leading scorer with 13 points. Also reaching double-digits, senior guard Brittany Binnie (Middletown, N.Y.) totaled 12 points and senior forward Dana Rommel (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored ten points. Binnie also made eight assists.

Herald's 18 points was a season-high; she was 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the floor and 2-of-4 (50.0%) at the line. Laing scored 14 points in her third start of the season and sophomore forward Ashlen Staybrook (Pickerington, OH ) led the rebounding effort with 10 rebounds, also a season-high. In the backcourt, senior guard Carley Glass (Swedesboro, NJ ) and sophomore forward Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA ) each recorded eight points and four assists. Smith grabbed seven rebounds and Glass made four steals. 

The women's basketball team resumes their CACC schedule with a 2:00 p.m. contest at the University of the Sciences on Sunday, February 21.
