Philadelphia, PA – (2/27/2010) – Chestnut Hill College held a 29-28 lead with 2:32 left to play in the opening half, but senior forward Amelia Simmons (Wilmington, Del.) inspired Wilmington University to a 36-31 halftime lead before finishing with 34 points in a Wildcat win. Chestnut Hill College recognized five graduating Griffins in a brief ceremony prior to the start of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) finale.
Sophomore forward Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA ) gave Chestnut Hill College (5-22, 4-15) a 20-18 advantage with 7:46 remaining in the opening period. The Griffins held the lead for the next 5:42 but a combination of Simmons and fellow senior forward Jamie Hensley (Rising Sun, Md.) stole the momentum for Wilmington University (14-12, 11-7). The Wildcats took a 36-31 lead into the locker rooms and led by as many as 18 points, 69-51 (7:16), in the second half behind Simmons dominating performance. Simmons was 10-of-19 (52.6%) from the field, including a 5-of-7 (71.4%) clip from beyond the arc. She was 9-of-10 (90.0%) from the free throw line and also recorded seven rebounds, two block, and a steal. Hensley finished with 15 points and senior guard Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) chipped in eight points and seven assists.
Senior forward Chanta'l Hardy (Philadelphia, PA ) led the Griffins on the both ends of the court with 11 points and four steals. Smith finished with eight points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Freshman forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA ) recorded nine points, a block, and two steals while senior forward Jenna Beck (Philadelphia, PA ) added eight points in her final home contest.
Beck and Hardy were honored along with teammates; Carley Glass (Swedesboro, NJ ), Maryanne Glass (Swedesboro, NJ ), and Davina Yacab (Patterson, NJ ) in a brief Senior Day ceremony preceding this afternoon's CACC doubleheader. Hardy and Yacab transferred to Chestnut Hill College from Harcum College; Hardy is the Griffins' second leading scorer this season (259 points, 9.6/game) and Yacab led the Griffins in rebounding a year ago (203, 8.1/game). Maryanne Glass was the Coach's Award winner for the 2008-2009 campaign while her sister, Carley, earned the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award. Carley finishes her career second on the all-time assists list (318). A three-year captain, Beck completes her collegiate career seventh all-time in points (876) and fifth all-time in rebounds (563).
