Lafayette Hill, PA – (3/11/2010) – The Chestnut Hill College women's lacrosse team opened their season this afternoon with a home contest against American International College. The Yellow Jackets scored the first 11 goals of the affair before posting a 21-7 victory over the Griffins. Senior attack Maryanne Glass (Swedesboro, NJ ) headlined the Griffin effort with four goals.
Sophomore midfielder Courtney Szawlowski (Northampton, Mass.) sparked American International College (4-0) in the early going, as her third goal of the contest gave the Yellow Jackets a 5-0 lead 12:10 into the contest. The Yellow Jackets netted six more scores before Chestnut Hill College (0-1) got on the scoreboard. Back-to-back goals from Glass and sophomore attack Kelly McKay (Perkasie, PA) cut the deficit to 11-2 with less than four minutes remaining in the first half (3:07), but the Yellow Jackets responded with two scores of their own before halftime to carry a 13-2 advantage into the break. The Griffins were able to keep pace with the Yellow Jackets through most of the closing period, but a 5-2 Yellow Jacket run in the final three minutes put the contest out of reach for Chestnut Hill College.
Senior midfielder Katie Warner (Westfield, Mass.) finished with five goals leading the Yellow Jackets offensively. She had plenty of support, as Szawlowski and freshman midfielder Jennifer Thomas (Waterford, Conn.) finished with four goals apiece. Sophomore attack Ashleigh Szawlowski (Northampton, Mass.) recorded three goals and two assists while senior midfielder Morgan Mostronardi (Corunna, Ontario) supplied a goal and three assists. Junior goalkeeper Gina Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) made five saves in the winning effort.
Maryanne Glass was 3-for-3 on free position opportunities and scored her fourth goal off an assist from her sister, senior midfielder Carley Glass (Swedesboro, NJ ). Carley also recorded two goals, two ground balls, and three draw controls. Defensively, junior midfielder Jillian Sanger (Bowmansville, PA) led the Griffins with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior Cherise Bell (Elkins Park, PA) took the loss (0-1) and made nine saves in her first contest in between the pipes.
The women's lacrosse team opens their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 4:00 p.m. home contest against Philadelphia University on Wednesday, March 17.
