3/25/2010 9:13:23 PM

Philadelphia, PA – (3/25/2010) – The Lightning landed two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) wins over Chestnut Hill College this afternoon, as the Griffins fell a few hits shy of completing two comebacks against Goldey-Beacom College. The Lightning took the first game 4-1 and the second, 4-2. Freshman third baseman Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) led the Griffins with three hits in the twin bill.

A lead-off walk to senior second baseman Julie Treen (Upper Township, NJ) in the fourth inning of the opener was followed by back-to-back singles, as freshman right fielder Allie Schempp (Clayton, NJ) brought Treen home to tie the contest 1-1. Goldey-Beacom College (9-4, 3-1) reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a run-scoring single from sophomore catcher Danielle Rice (Mullica Hill, NJ). Two more Lightning runs in the sixth inning gave sophomore relief pitcher Sadie Jones (Milford, DE) the cushion she would need to hold on for the save. Freshman pitcher Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) threw all seven inning and took the loss (0-5) for the Griffins. She allowed two earned runs on ten hits and a walk while striking out three. Junior pitcher Heather Draper (Bridgeville, DE) earned the win for the Lightning, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four in four innings of work.

Goldey-Beacom College led early in game two as well, scoring two runs in the second inning on base-hits from sophomore third baseman Jordan Waterloo (Waldorf, MD) and senior catcher Lauren Witzke (Laurel, DE), 2-0. Chestnut Hill College (0-14, 0-4) cut into the Lightning lead in the fourth inning as Treen reached home on an error, after tripling to center field. In the top of the fifth inning, two, two-out hits provided two Lightning insurance runs, 4-1, before the Griffins made things interesting in their final at-bat. Treen singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. The next two Griffins reached on errors allowing Benson to sacrifice a run home with a fly to centerfield. Unfortunately, the rally was killed by a run-down and a pop-out to third leaving the Griffins with a 4-2 loss. Wilenta took the loss; she allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two. Freshman pitcher Tori Anne Davies (Bear, DE) collected the win for Goldey-Beacom College. She worked the first, four innings without allowing an earned run on four hits and a walk. Davis struck out three. Freshman Leanne Miller (Vineland, NJ) entered the game in relief to pick up a save. She worked three innings without allowing an earned run while giving up one hit and striking out two.

The softball team continues their CACC schedule with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Post University on Saturday, March 27.
