Lafayette Hill, PA – (4/1/2010) – Chestnut Hill College and Dowling College registered a goal apiece in the opening 2:38, but the Golden Lions soon seized control of the affair as they defeated the Griffins 21-8 in this evening women's lacrosse game at the Plymouth Whitemarsh Football Stadium. The Glass sisters accounted for seven Griffin scores.
The Griffins had a difficult challenge set before them as they hosted the nations #8 ranked team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). Junior midfielder Jillian Sanger (Bowmansville, PA) answered the Golden Lions' initial tally with a scoring strike 2:38 into the contest. The game remained tied, 1-1, for eight minutes (10:52) before the Golden Lions generated a run. With six straight scores over eight minutes (18:30) the Golden Lions extended their advantage to 7-1. Senior attack Maryanne Glass (Swedesboro, NJ) then helped Chestnut Hill College (2-4) narrow the gap prior to halftime with three goals in the last 11 minutes of the period. Her sister, senior midfielder Carley Glass (Swedesboro, NJ) threw in a tally as well, but five Golden Lion goals kept the visitors comfortably ahead 12-5 heading to the break.
In the second half, Dowling College (5-2) outscored the Griffins 9-3 to facilitate the 21-8 final. They held a 40-24 advantage in shots, a 20-11 edge in draw controls, and successfully completed 12-of-15 (80%) clears. The Golden Lions were led offensively by juniors Sam Messineo (Shirley, NY) and Cassandra Cronin (Islip Terrace, NY), who each totaled five goals. Messineo also supplied three assists. Senior midfielder Brianna Falese (Centereach, NY) helped the Golden Lions control possession throughout securing nine draws and six ground balls, while junior goalkeeper Rachael Goldstein (Ridge, NY) collected the win by making 11 saves in 45:04 of net minding.
Maryanne Glass was the Griffins' top scorer with four tallies. She scored three via the free position attempt, converting 60% of her chances (3-for-5). She also recorded two ground balls, four draws, and a caused turnover. Carley Glass finished with three goals and an assist on Sanger's score. Carley was 2-for-2 (100%) on free position attempts and matched her sister in the rest of the categories; two ground balls, four draws, and a caused turnover. Freshman attack Maya Fairweather (Bowie, MD) supplied the other Griffin assist and junior goalkeeper junior Cherise Bell (Elkins Park, PA) took the loss (2-4) despite making ten saves in 56:54 minutes of play.
The women's lacrosse team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with an 11:00 a.m. contest at Georgian Court University on Saturday, April 3.
