Philadelphia, PA – (4/15/2010) – Freshmen pitchers Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) and Veronica Wilenta (Bick, NJ) allowed one run apiece, but the Chestnut Hill College bats went silent against the Wilmington University rotation. The Wildcats scored the only run of the opener in the sixth inning (1-0), before taking the second contest 3-0.

Benson battled Wilmington University (16-14-1, 8-6) through five scoreless innings of the opener before allowing a run in the sixth inning. The lead-off Wildcat reached on an error and the following double threatened to score the first run of the contest, but a great throw from freshman left fielder Allie Schempp (Clayton, NJ) got the runner at the plate. Unfortunately, the next Wildcat batter doubled as well to bring home the run anyhow. Benson took the loss (1-11) despite only allowing one run on four hits and a walk. She struck out three. Senior pitcher Kim Lawrence (Wilmington, DE) earned the win only allowing two hits while recording 13 strikeouts.

Wilenta looked to get revenge in game two for the Griffins, but the Wildcats scored two in the third inning and another in the fourth inning while holding the home team to two hits and zero runs, 3-0. Junior third baseman Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) singled in the third inning and in the sixth inning but the Griffins failed to bring a run home as junior pitcher Heather Karasek (Linthicum, MD) only allowed three base runners in the contest. She struck out seven in the win. Wilenta took the loss (1-11) for Chestnut Hill College (2-26, 2-14). She gave up one earned run on eight hits and a walk while striking out three.

The softball team travels to Concordia College for a 1:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 17.
