Philadelphia, PA – (4/20/2010) – The hustle of freshman shortstop Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) tied the second game of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader before Philadelphia University defeated Chestnut Hill College 6-3 in the eight innings. The Lady Rams won the opener 10-0, in five innings, behind a perfect game from sophomore pitcher Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD).

Schmidt struck out ten, including six straight in the second and third innings of today's opener. She retired 15 straight Griffins to throw a perfect game while the Lady Ram offense scored ten runs on 13 hits.

In the third inning of game two , senior third baseman Kristin Giamatteo (Baltimore, NY) doubled in a run for Philadelphia University (20-14, 12-6), but the Griffins matched that tally with a run in the fifth inning. Benson singled through the right side and then hustled to third base on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore second baseman Kayla Shoap (Newville, PA). Chestnut Hill College (2-32, 2-20) capitalized on their first scoring opportunity as Benson took home on a grounder from freshman designated player Nicole Hitchings (Warminster, PA), 1-1. The contest remained tied until the Lady Rams put the pressure on with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Benson led off the at-bat with a single to right field. Shoap reached on her bunt and the attempted throw went wide of first base, allowing Benson to score on a head-first slide. Unfortunately, the Lady Rams out-scored the Griffins 4-1 in the extra frame to sweep the conference doubleheader. Junior third baseman Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) recorded three hits in the contest.

The softball team travels to Georgian Court University for a 3:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader on Thursday, April 22.
