Wilmington, DE – (4/21/2010) – Chestnut Hill College resumed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play this afternoon with a doubleheader at Wilmington University. After dropping the opener 4-1 the Griffins had a chance to steal game two. Unfortunately, the Wildcat closer survived the final Griffin at-bat with narrow 4-3 victory. Junior right fielder Dan Etherton (Princeton, NJ) and sophomore center fielder Eric Blood (Perkasie, PA) each recorded two hits in the second game.
Senior pitcher J.T. Gregory (Woodbridge, VA) came on in the ninth inning to close the second game for Wilmington University (23-12, 12-1) and junior Andrew Donofry (Hatboro, PA) greeted him with a pinch-hit single. Sophomore Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) entered the game to pinch-run at first base and he promptly found second base on a passed ball. Following two outs, a balk moved Daywalt to third base and a Blood single brought him home cutting the margin to 4-3. Blood went to second base on another passed ball and a walk to Etherton put the winning run on first base. Gregory then struck out the Griffins' last chance to seal the victory for the Wildcats. Junior pitcher Kurt Bruce (Lusby, MD) earned the win for the Wildcats. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out four over seven innings. Freshman pitcher Rudy Behrens (Wallingford, CT) took the loss (1-2) for Chestnut Hill College (12-18, 9-7). He gave up four runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three in his seven innings.
Chestnut Hill College scored the first run of the afternoon on the hustle of junior shortstop George Kochu (Pottstown, PA). After drawing a walk, Kochu took off for second base. The pitcher came to first base and the trailing throw to second base soared into left field allowing Kochu to reach home. That, however, was the only run the Griffins would score as junior pitcher Joe Harris (Douglassville, PA) settled in on the hill for the Wildcats. Harris spread five hits and two walks over nine innings while striking out nine. Senior pitcher Ryan Weber (Philadelphia, PA) also went deep into the game; throwing eight strong innings for the Griffins. He allowed three runs on ten hits and three walks, while striking out three in the loss (3-2).
The baseball team hosts the University of the Sciences in a non-conference, night-game on Thursday, April 22. The contest is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
