Philadelphia, PA – (4/22/2010) – The softball team concluded their season this afternoon as they hosted Caldwell College in their final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Cougars no-hit Chestnut Hill College en route to a 6-0 win in the game one; they won the second contest 5-0. Prior to the start of today's twin bill, seniors Julie Treen (Upper Township, NJ) and Kaitlyn Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) were honored by their teammates and the athletics staff for their contributions to the softball program.
Junior catcher Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA) recorded the Griffins' first hit of the afternoon, with a one-out single in the first inning of game two. Chestnut Hill College (2-36, 2-24) recorded a base-hit in each of the first, three innings but no runs scored. Fortunately, freshman pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) matched the Cougars' pitching performance early to keep the contest scoreless through three innings. Caldwell College (35-11, 21-3) got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, bringing home three runs on an error and sacrifice fly after opening the at-bat with two consecutive singles, 3-0. The Griffins threatened in the bottom of the frame with singles from Treen and Wilenta, but they came away empty handed while the Cougars added two insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning, 5-0. They eventually won the contest by that final.
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR) took care of the rest. She struck out five Griffins and only surrendered a walk to freshman left fielder Allie Schempp (Clayton, NJ), who did not advance past second base in the third inning. The Cougars won the opener 6-0; senior first baseman Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA) went 2-for-4 with three runs-batted-in (RBI).
