Griffins Tangle With Tigers in CACC Competition

Philadelphia, PA – (1/6/2011) – Holy Family University used a 13-point halftime advantage to control this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Chestnut Hill College. The Tigers increased their advantage to 20 points midway through the second half, before defeating the Griffins on an 87-53 final. Senior forward Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, NJ) was a jack-of-all-trades for the Tigers filling the box score with 14 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists. Sophomores, forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) and guard Asha Jones (New Castle, DE) led the Griffins with nine points apiece.
 
A late first-half run allowed Holy Family University (8-2, 5-0) to expand a 23-21 advantage (7:16) to 39-26 halftime edge. The Tigers shot 46.9% (15-of-32) from the field in the opening period with sophomore forward Erin Mann (West Chester, PA) leading the effort on 5-of-6 (83.3%) shooting. She led the Tigers at the break with 11 points while Carr took care of the rest with ten points, nine rebounds, and five assists in the first 20 minutes. In the second half, freshman guard Mary Ellen McCollum (Abington, PA) came off the bench to spur the Tigers to an 87-53 win. Mann added defense to her 13-point night with two blocks and three steals while McCollum finished with 12 points. Graduate forward Samantha Thompson (Southampton, PA) was the fourth Tiger in double figures with 11 points.
 
Jones fueled the Chestnut Hill College (3-8, 1-3) offense with three assists and three steals in addition to her career-high scoring performance. Sophomore guard Marqesah Spicer (Philadelphia, PA) and senior center Cecelia Herald (Gaithersburg, MD) led a strong Griffin bench effort with seven points and six points, respectively. Herald led the Griffins on the glass with six rebounds.
 
The women's basketball team remains home to host Bloomfield College in a 1:00 p.m. CACC contest on Saturday, January 8.
