Box Score Washington, DC – (11/12/2011) – The women's basketball team opened their 2011-2012 season this afternoon with a tough competition at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). Still coming together as a team, Chestnut Hill College struggled to keep pace with the Firebirds who earned an 86-51 win in front of their home crowd.
UDC (1-0) led Chestnut Hill College (0-1) for the duration of the affair, scoring the contest's first ten points and leading by as many as 40, 84-44, in the final minutes (3:06). The Griffins turned the ball over 31 times and only shot 30.0% (17-of-56) from the field, helping the Firebirds to victory. They owned a 43-21 halftime lead thanks to ten points from junior guard Janelle Junior (Riverside, CA) and an overpowering team defense. Junior would finish the contest with 17 points while contributing four steals to a 17-steal team performance. Senior guard Jamilia Bonner (Mobile, AL) recorded four steals as well; she also hit four from long range (4-of-10, 40%) en route to a 16-point afternoon. Senior guard Lauren Brittingham (Washington, DC) contributed 11 points, while senior forward Dohnay Banice (Wilmington, DE) recorded eight points and nine rebounds.
Junior guards,
Marqesah Spicer (Philadelphia, PA) and
Latoya Laing (Snellville, GA) finished with eight points apiece to lead the Griffins. Spicer also handed out three assists, while Laing was 2-of-4 (50.0%) from three-point territory. Senior guard
Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA) offered seven points to the effort and senior forward
Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA) kept the Griffins close on the glass with 12 rebounds.
The women's basketball team looks to bounce back with a trip to Molloy College on Monday, November 14. Tip-off is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
