Box Score Old Westbury, NY – (11/19/2011) – The one-two combination of freshman guard
Lila Jones (Lansdale, PA) and junior forward
Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) gave Chestnut Hill College and early nine-point advantage, 15-6, but in the end it was New York Institute Technology's (NYIT) senior guard Cierra Baker (Windsor, CT) who stole the show in a 80-70 Bears win. Baker totaled 32 points, ten rebounds, six assists, a block, and nine steals.
Chestnut Hill College (0-3) owned their nine-point lead with 14:34 still to play in the opening period, but over time 32 turnovers outweighed a 43-33 rebounding edge and a superior shooting percentage, 48.0% (24-of-50) to 41.2% (28-of-68). The Griffins were able to keep the lead for a majority of the second half and commanded NYIT (2-1) by as many as eight points, 54-46, as the affair closed in on the 11-minute mark (11:23). Unfortunately, the Griffins lost control and allowed the Bears to rally for victory in the final five minutes. Senior guard Nikki Jo Rotolo (Rome, NY) put the Bears in the lead, 64-63, at 5:39 and down the stretch Baker and junior center Chole Johnson (Sea Cliff, NY) carried the home team to a ten-point victory.
Baker's renaissance performance was supported by three others in double figures. Rotolo provided the Bears with 13 points, three rebounds, four assists; Johnson recorded ten points and five rebounds, and sophomore guard Demitra Apergis (Littleton, CO) provided ten points, three rebounds, and five assists.
Alexander finished as the leading scorer for the Griffins. She totaled 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, which included two baskets from three-point territory (2-of-3, 66.7%) and one from the free throw line (1-of-1, 100.0%). Jones offered 12 points and four assists to the Griffin effort. Senior forward
Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA) and junior guard
Marqesah Spicer (Philadelphia, PA) were contributors as well. Washington scored ten points and grabbed a team-high, eight rebounds, while Spicer registered her career-high as a Griffin, 14 points.
The women's basketball team continues their opening run of road games with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Lock Haven University on Monday, November 28.
