Poor First Half Grounds Griffins in Home Opener

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (11/30/2011) – Chestnut Hill College hosted Kutztown University in their home opener this evening and the Golden Bears left Sorgenti Arena with a 69-55 win. A 13-point first half lead, 33-20, and a double-double from junior forward Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA) helped the Golden Bears to the victory. The Griffins were led by 15 points from senior guard Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA) and 12 points from junior guard Latoya Laing (Snellville, GA).
 
Kutztown University (2-5) slowly built a lead after the opening tip and they finished the first half with a flurry behind the play of Zewe and junior guard Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA). Zewe totaled 11 points and five rebounds in the first half. The Golden Bears held the Griffins to a 22.6% (7-of-31) first-half shooting percentage and won the rebound battle, 25-20, to post their 33-20 halftime lead. Zewe finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds, but sophomore guard Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA) led the Golden Bears to victory, 69-55, with 16 points and seven assists. Sophomore forward Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ) offered 12 points while Wood recorded five assists in addition to her ten points.
 
Following intermission, Chestnut Hill College (0-5) was able to keep pace thanks to the play of Smith and Laing, who combined for 21 second-half points. Smith was 6-of-11 (54.5%) from the floor and 3-of-6 (50.0%) from the free throw line to record 15 points for the Griffins, she also provided three assists. Laing hit two late three-point baskets (2-of-7, 28.6%) to help her reach double digits for the first time this season. Senior forward Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA) gave the Griffin offense plenty of second chances with eight offensive rebounds; she totaled ten in all to lead the team. Senior forward Ashlen Stayrook (Pickerington, OH) led the defensive effort with two blocks and three steals.
 
The women's basketball team stays at home to open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 6:00 p.m. contest against Holy Family University.
