Late Rebounds Carry Cougars Over Griffins

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (12/10/2011) – Caldwell College used a 12-point halftime advantage to defeat Chestnut Hill College 71-67 in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. The visiting Cougars shot 51.7% (15-of-29) from the floor in the opening period to grab the lead. The Griffins outscored them in the closing frame, 40-32, but the late rebounding of the Cougars made up for 15 second-half points from junior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon, PA) and still left the home team short four points shy of their league rival.
 
A balanced team effort from Caldwell College (5-5, 4-1) carried the Cougars the halftime lead. The momentum swung the visitor's way around the 12-minute mark and their lead extended to a 20-point margin by the four-minute mark (4:06), 38-18; on the effort of freshman forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI). Chestnut Hill College (1-7, 1-2) whittled the deficit to 12 by the break, 39-27, thanks to the bench effort led by senior forward Ashlen Stayrook (Pickerington, OH), who offered ten points and three steals in the opening period. Alexander took over in the second half, spiriting the Griffins to a 52-51 lead with 7:39 remaining in the contest. The contest was tied four times after that, but in the final three minutes the Cougars crashed the offensive boards to earn their fourth conference win, 71-67.
 
Sophomore forward Janette Anderson (Lynn, MA) provided a double-double off the bench for the Cougars with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Caswell contributed an additional 11 points, a block, and three steals in reserve, which was supported by the starting efforts of junior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY) and classmate, guard Torey Jones (North Providence, RI). Felix totaled 14 points, nine rebounds, three blocks, and a steal while Jones recorded 13 points, five assists, and two steals.
 
Stayrook scored in double-digits off the Griffin bench for the second straight game. She finished with a team-high 18 points on 8-of-13 (61.5%) shooting while putting in her share of hustle as well, with eight rebounds, a block, and four steals. Alexander was 6-of-11 (54.5%) in the second half, she finished with 17 points. Senior guard Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA) ran the offense with six assists and junior guard Asha Jones (New Castle, DE) helped Stayrook lead the Griffin defensive effort with four steals.
 
The women's basketball team resumes play on Saturday, December 17, with a 12:00 p.m. CACC contest at Georgian Court University.
