Aggressive Offense Warrants Win For Women’s Basketball

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (12/30/2011) – An aggressive and balanced effort from the entire Chestnut Hill College roster earned the Griffins a 63-59 victory over Mercy College this evening. Visiting the free throw line 38 times (26-of-38, 68.4%), the Griffins took advantage of their extra shots to win a contest that featured 49 turnovers and a combined 36-of-124 (29.0%) shooting performance. Junior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) was the Griffins leading scorer with ten points.
 
Each side took turns holding the lead in the opening ten minutes (10:34), Chestnut Hill College (2-9) first, 6-2 (17:48), then Mercy College (0-10), 21-16. In the next ten minutes the Griffins first went on a 10-3 run, 26-24 (6:23), before taking a 34-31 lead into the locker rooms. After intermission play remained close, but the Mavericks saw their only lead come at 5:13 on a pair of free throws from junior guard Jessica Biggs (Nanuet, NY), 54-53. Coincidentally, it was free throws that put the Griffins back ahead, two from senior guard Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA) made it 62-57 Griffins with 41 seconds to play, and a third from junior guard Marqesah Spicer (Philadelphia, PA) accounted for the game's final point, 63-57.
 
Senior forward Jasmine Williams (Waldorf, MD) was the Mavericks top performer with 13 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal. She was supported by 12 points, five rebounds, and four steals from Biggs and two others who reached double figures. Sophomore guard Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, NY) recorded 11 points and eight rebounds while senior forward Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, MD) contributed ten points and six rebounds.
 
Alexander added four steals and four rebounds to her double digit performance, but the Griffins were also fortunate to receive two blocks, two steals, and 15 rebounds, six offensively, from senior center Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA). Spicer totaled eight points and two steals, and Smith provided five assists.

The women's basketball team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) in their next home contest; a 6:00 p.m. tip-off against the University of the Sciences is scheduled for Tuesday, January 3.
