Griffins Earn Pruitt First Win At Pratt Gymnasium

Box Score New Castle, DE – (12/8/2011) – Freshman guard Lila Jones (Lansdale, PA) and junior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon, PA) got Chestnut Hill College started and a strong bench effort helped finish off the task as the Griffins defeated Wilmington University 68-43 in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. Four Griffins reached double figures in Head Coach Laura Pruitt's first win, headed by Jones' 14 points.
 
Off the opening tip, Jones and Alexander propelled Chestnut Hill College (1-6, 1-1) and support soon followed from senior forward Ashlen Stayrook (Pickerington, OH). The result was a 26-8 Griffin lead with 8:03 still to play in the opening half. Jones totaled ten points in the period, Alexander offered seven, and Stayrook netted six. In the second half, the Griffins lead over Wilmington University (1-5, 0-2) reached as many as 33, 63-30, on a layup from freshman guard Randi Jo Farrell (West Orange, NJ) with 5:57 left to play in the affair. Behind sophomore guard Tianna Wagner (Newark, DE) the Wildcats would narrow the gap by the final buzzer, 68-43, but the Griffins had plenty of insurance and would leave Pratt Gymnasium with their first win of the season. Helping Wagner and the Wildcats effort, sophomore guard Samantha Retas (Brooklyn, NY) grabbed seven rebounds.
 
Jones earned her season-high by working inside and out. She was 4-of-7 (57.1%) from the field, including a 2-of-4 (50.0%) performance from long range, and the addition of a 5-of-6 (83.3%) clip from the free throw line. Alexander finished with 11 points and matched senior guard Aiesha Smith (Philadelphia, PA) for the team lead in rebounds with eight. Stayrook and Farrell each recorded ten points to lead the bench contribution, Farrell hustled to seven rebounds.
 
The women's basketball team returns home to face Caldwell College in a 1:00 p.m. CACC contest on Saturday, December 10.
