Lafayette Hill, PA – (3/26/2011) – The Chestnut Hill College women's lacrosse team staged another thrilling victory, scoring the final eight goals of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest to vanquish Dominican College 14-12 in an overtime triumph. Sophomore attack Nicole Covella (Vineland, NJ) spirited the rally with six goals in the closing run.
Dominican College (2-2, 1-1) was dominant early on, leading to a 9-4 halftime lead. The Lady Chargers overwhelmed the Chestnut Hill College (3-3, 2-1) at the start and with a balanced attack they posted a 4-1 advantage midway through the first half (15:30). The run continued until intermission, leaving the Griffins behind. In the second half the margin climbed to seven, 11-4, but a Griffin timeout and a change at goalkeeper disrupted the Lady Charger flow. The momentum slowly changed hands as Covella awoke the Griffins for a courageous charge. Her effort was supported by sophomore midfielder Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA), who did the dirty work in the rally. With 44 seconds remaining, Covella located sophomore attack Christina Squillante (Kings Park, NY) to force the extra frame, 12-12; she then recorded both overtime tallies propelling the Griffins to victory.
The Lady Charger effort was led by five goals and two assists from sophomore attack Brianna Blank (Point Pleasant, NJ). She was helped by four goals from senior midfielder Silje Karlsen (Vernon, NJ) and the defense of sophomore midfielder Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY); five ground balls, four draws, and three caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Caprio (Point Pleasant, NJ) made nine saves in the loss (2-2).
Covella totaled seven goals in the Griffins second straight overtime, CACC victory. Alexander was just as significant recording two goals, two assists, nine ground balls, seven draws, and causing seven turnovers. Squillante contributed three goals, while freshman goalkeeper Jessica Pennell (Hopkinton, NH) picked up the win in a relief appearance. She made four saves while earning her second win of the season (2-1).
The women's lacrosse team continues their CACC schedule with a 4:00 p.m. CACC contest at Philadelphia University on Monday, March 28.
