Griffins Take Trophy At West Chester University Tournament

West Chester, PA – (9/4/2011) – Chestnut Hill College was crowned winners of the West Chester University Tournament this evening, after defeating the hosting Golden Rams 1-0 in today's contest. Senior midfielder Anthony O'Connor (Philadelphia, PA) scored the game-winner at the 25-minute mark. The Griffins had earned favor after topping California University (PA) 1-0 in a penalty-kick shootout yesterday.
 
Junior midfielder Mark Pugliese (Philadelphia, PA) found O'Connor at the 25-minute mark to give Chestnut Hill College (1-0-1) a 1-0 lead in the opening half. The advantage was helpful as the Griffins and West Chester University (1-1) played evenly for the remaining 65 minutes. The opponents totaled nine shots apiece and the Golden Rams held a slight 5-3 advantage on corner kick opportunities.
 
Junior goalkeeper Mike Goldstein (Pennsauken, NJ) earned his second straight shutout (2-0) and made three saves for the Griffins. Senior forward Gavin Reid (Dundee, Scotland) and sophomore midfielder Mushe Wamulume (Media, PA) record two shots apiece. The Golden Rams offered a balanced attack with three players taking two shots apiece; fortunately, none could get one by Goldstein. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Marron (Tinton Falls, NJ) made two saves in the loss for West Chester University.
 
The men's soccer team travels to the University of the District of Columbia for their next contest; a 4:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, September 7.
