1/4/2012 12:22:00 AM

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (1/3/2012) – A slow start for the offense doomed Chestnut Hill College in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest with the University of the Sciences. The Devils were the benefactor, first sporting a 33-13 halftime lead before winning the affair by a 74-50 final. Griffin newcomer, freshman guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, NJ) led the team in scoring; she hit 4-of-9 (44.4%) from beyond the three-point line to total 12 points.

Chestnut Hill College (2-10, 1-4) recorded the first bucket of the contest, but then endured a 29-2 run from the University of the Sciences (7-5, 3-1), 29-4, before some late outside shooting helped the Griffins narrow the halftime deficit to 20, 33-13. Juniors, forward Carolyn Edwards (Huntingdon Valley, PA) and guard Emily Birman (Brick, NJ) combined for 18 of the Devils first-half points, Edwards led with ten. The Griffins late three-point barrage was initiated on a long range basket from junior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA), 29-7 (4:34), and continued with back-to-back corner threes from Gorczynski, 31-13 (3:00), while also providing the home team with some encouragement heading to the locker room. Unfortunately it was not enough, as the Devil advantage grew to more than 30, 65-34, before the five-minute mark (5:35). Another late Griffin push narrowed the final deficit to 24, 74-50, but was it was too little, too late, to derail the Devils.

Edwards and freshman guard Jessica Sylvester (Trevose, PA) each totaled 15 apiece to lead the Devils; Edwards added defense with two blocks and a steal, while Sylvester provided her scoring and four assists off the bench. Freshman guard Brianne Traub (Wayne, NJ) was the third Devil in double figures; she finished with 13 points in addition to her nine rebounds. Birman provided the Devils with eight assists to go along with her eight points.

Gorczynski made all four of her baskets from long range and came off the bench to serve as the Griffins leading scorer. Alexander totaled 11 points and nine rebounds, she was 2-of-4 (50.0%) from three-point territory and 5-of-8 (62.5%) at the free throw line.
The women's basketball team continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, January 7, with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Concordia College (NY).
