Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/19/2012) – In a three-set Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match, Chestnut Hill College gave league-leading Wilmington University all they could handle. The Griffins led at the start of their Side-Out Foundation Dig Pink event, but the Wildcats slowly gained control eventually won the match behind a strong team defense, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-23). Freshman outside hitter Abby Gruver (Coplay, Pa.) and junior middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.) headlined the Griffins attack.

Sophomore right side Kaitlyn Schock (Allentown, Pa.) was at the point of the early Chestnut Hill College (7-17, 3-10) offense, as she pushed the Griffins out to a 6-3 advantage on her third kill of the match. Wilmington University (22-4, 14-0) focused through the crazed crowd of Sorgenti Arena and slowly stole the set on a 25-18 final. The Griffins led again at the start of the second set, 4-2, but the Wildcats evened the score at 4-4. They paced the Griffins to a 14-14 tie before regaining the advantage for a 25-21 win. The third set was the closest with the CACC rivals trading points to a 21-21 stalemate. Unfortunately, the Wildcats struck first and forced a Griffin timeout at 23-21. Wiechecki led the Wildcats with nine kills; she also recorded three aces, and hustled to 11 digs in the match. Sophomore setter Kasey Couch (Woodbine, Md.) and freshman setter Alex Siolos (East Moriches, N.Y.) took turns directing the Wildcats; they record 16 and 12 assists, respectively. In a strong team defensive effort, junior middle hitter Katie Shorter (Pasadena, Md.) guarded the net for six blocks while Siolos added six digs and four blocks in addition to her offensive contribution.

Freshman defensive specialist Meghan Chiovitti (Brighton, Colo.) and junior defensive specialist Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) anchored the defense with ten digs apiece, while Markowski contributed on both sides of the net with six kills and three blocks.

The Side-Out Foundation's goal is to advance clinical trials, increase compassionate support services and educate communities. Side-Out supports teams nationwide in their volleyball tournaments, clinics and other fundraising efforts. The foundation offers practical support for fundraising in addition to educational material for participants in order to help them become effective advocates for breast cancer. It contributes the funds to organizations that serve breast cancer patients, whether it is in the form of research, medical services or compassionate support. The term side-out refers to a situation in volleyball when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. It is hoped that Side-Out will do the same for breast cancer patients, providing them with the support, education and best available treatments to regain control of their lives.
