The contest was close from beginning to end with West Chester University (0-1) leading off the initial tip, 5-0 (18:28) and Chestnut Hill College (1-1) holding their maximum lead in the final minute, 60-55 (0:53). Hightower and sophomore forward
Alssene Saintilus (Irvington, N.J.) brought a 51-47 (5:59) Golden Ram lead to a tie contest, 51-51, just under five minutes remaining (4:53). Hightower struck again with a three-point play at 2:03 that delivered the Griffins a 58-55 advantage. A pair of free throws from senior guard
Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, N.J.) made it 60-55 Griffins with 0:53 seconds remaining, but the battle did not end there. The Golden Rams took the ball at the heart of the Griffin defense and grabbed a one-point lead, 61-60, on a free throw from senior guard Jon Breeden (Harrisburg, Pa.), with only 0:13 seconds left to play. Following a Griffin timeout (0:08), Ashe held for the final shot. He delivered in the clutch to earn the Griffins their first win of the season in epic fashion.
Breeden and sophomore guard Corey Blake (West Chester, Pa.) led the Golden Ram effort. Breeden finished with seven points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals, while Blake led a balanced Golden Rams effort with ten points, nine rebounds, a block, and a steal.
Saintilus and DiRugeris shared the Griffins top point total with 13 points apiece, but it was the renaissance efforts of Ashe and Hightower the fueled the resilient victory. Hightower contributed ten points, seven rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and three steals, while Ashe offered nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals in addition to his game-winning bucket. The men's basketball team continues their tour of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with a pair of games in the Wolf's Bus Line Classic, hosted by Shippensburg University. The first contest is an 8:00 p.m. contest against the hosting Raiders on Friday, November 16.
