Griffins Lose Handle in CACC Loss to Lions

Box Score Lakewood, N.J. – (11/14/2012) – Turnovers plagued Chestnut Hill College in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Georgian Court University (GCU), as the Lions forced 28 Griffin turnovers in a 67-51 victory. In a team effort, the Lions used the Griffin miscues to their advantage in the form of a 30-9 point swing. Junior forward Annie Farrow (Ocean Township, N.J.) led the Griffin effort with 11 points, nine rebounds, and two steals.
 
Georgian Court University (1-0, 1-0) led the whole way as the Chestnut Hill College (1-2, 0-1) turnovers slowly buried the Griffins behind a 26-4 (9:33) deficit. Sophomore guard Lila Jones (Lansdale, Pa.) was the spark that brought the Griffins back over the next six minutes (3:01). She hit both of her three-point baskets (2-of-4, 50.0%) in a 19-9 run that left the Griffins down ten, 33-23. Unfortunately, the Lions settled down play heading into halftime and bounced their lead back to 15, 37-23, in the final three minutes. The Griffins showed a determined spirit at the start of the second half, chipping away at the Lion lead until they reached a manageable nine-point margin at 15:33. The spread reached 15 again at 12:14 as the Lions responded to the Griffins advance, only to shrink back to five, 50-45, with 8:47 left to play. That's when the Griffins turnovers resurfaced, allowing the Lions a 17-6 closing run.
 
The Lions totaled 52 points off of Griffin turnovers and a 43-33 rebounding edge, as shooting remained relatively even (40.0% CHC – 41.4% GCU) in the affair. Sophomore forward Tahira Matthews (Bloomfield, N.J.) led a team effort with 14 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Graduate forward Christina White (New Brunswick, N.J.) provided 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists and, off the bench, freshman guard Tara Steakin (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) totaled 12 points. Contributing quality overall performances, senior guards, Shauneia McPhearson (Chicago, Ill.) recorded eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals, and Ebony Sellers (Camden, N.J.) offered six points, five rebounds, and five steals.
 
For the Griffins, Farrow's paint play was complimented by Jones' perimeter shooting. She finished with ten points.
 
The women's basketball team returns home to host Molloy College in a 6:00 p.m. contest on Friday, November 16.
