Penmen Persevere Against Griffins Second-Half Surge

11/25/2012 10:35:00 PM

Box Score Manchester, N.H. – (11/25/2012) – A gritty and relentless Chestnut Hill College came from behind, once again, to make today's contest at Southern New Hampshire University a competitive one. The Penmen led by as many as 15 at halftime, 34-19, only to allow the Griffins back into the affair and then narrowly escape with a five-point victory, 56-51. Two Griffins reached double figures as sophomore guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) and senior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) totaled 23 points in the Griffins 34-point, rallying second-half effort.

Southern New Hampshire University (3-0) took advantage of another poor first-half shooting performance (7-of-25, 28.0%) by Chestnut Hill College (1-5), as the home team built a 34-19 halftime lead behind their own 51.6% (16-of-31) shooting display and a 20-14 rebounding edge. Senior forward Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) led the Penmen in their dominate first-half with 13 points, five rebounds, a block, and a steal, but it was the combined efforts of Gorczynski and Alexander that brought the Griffins soaring back in the second half. The duo spirited the Griffins back to within seven, 36-29, only four minutes (16:54) into the closing period and with another surge late in the contest they gave the Griffins a chance at the comeback victory. The Penmen led by ten, 51-41, heading into the final five minutes (4:55) of the affair, but after a free throw from freshman guard Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and seven points from Alexander the deficit dwindled to two, 51-49 (1:26). Unfortunately, the Penmen had just enough left in the tank to endure the Griffins revival as a three-pointer from sophomore guard Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) and the necessary finishing free throws left the contest's final in the Penmen's favor, 56-51.

Sorrell finished with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds as the lead in the Penmen's winning cause. Rocha offered seven points and seven rebounds while junior forward Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) also played a significant for the Penmen with eight points, three rebounds, a block, and two steals.

Groczynski scored 11 of her team-leading 15 points in the second half. Additionally, she totaled three rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal. Alexander scored all 12 of her points in the second half. She also recorded four rebounds and a steal. Sophomore forward Annie Farrow (Ocean Township, N.J.) chipped in with three points, a team-high seven rebounds, and two steals.

The women's basketball team returns home to resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Bloomfield College on Saturday, December 1.
