Deacon Determination Is Key to Griffin Demise

12/1/2012 8:39:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (12/1/2012) – Bloomfield College had a tough time settling into Sorgenti Arena, as Chestnut Hill College led 16-3 after the first ten minutes of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. Once on the scoreboard, the Deacons slowly chipped away at the Griffin lead, briefly leading before halftime, 19-18, and again in the final minutes to claim an eventual 47-42 victory. The Deacons won with a balanced effort, while the Griffins were led by senior guard Latoya Laing (Snellville, Ga.) and junior center Aimee Bouie (New Castle, Del.).

With Bloomfield College (3-1, 2-0) trying to find their shot, sophomore guard Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) and senior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) served as the engine for Chestnut Hill College (1-6, 0-1), who built a 16-3 advantage in the opening ten minutes (9:54). The Deacons whittled away at the spread behind the gritty paint play of freshman forward Iman Williams (Chesapeake, Va.), who put the visitors down two, 16-14, with 6:03 to go in the first half. The Deacons tied the game on their next possession, 16-16 (4:50), and momentarily held the lead, 19-18 (2:33), before Laing sent the Griffins to the locker room with a 23-19 halftime edge. After intermission, Bouie tried to keep the Griffins in the lead, but freshman guard Nahja Carter (Neptune, N.J.) and senior forward Shaniqua Bacote (Paterson, N.J.) would not let the Deacons die. The lead changed hands with 10:32 to play, 34-33, when the Deacons took the edge on a Bacote layup. But the advantage was short-lived as sophomore forward Annie Farrow (Ocean Township, N.J.) scored six straight Griffin points to earn the advantage back at 3:31, 39-38. Unfortunately, the Griffins would not score again until Alexander drew a foul on a last-second heave. She hit all three shots to bring the final score to 47-42, but by then the Deacons had stolen the victory with contributions coming from all players.

Williams came off the Deacon bench to lead the visitors with 15 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Her supporting cast was headlined by eight points, nine rebounds, two assists, and six steals from freshman guard Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.).

Bouie's ten points, nine rebounds, and two blocks anchored the Griffin effort, while Laing scored all of her team-leading 11 points in the first half. At the point, Townsend-Mobley finished with two points, four rebounds, six assists, and a steal. Alexander grabbed a team-high ten rebounds to go along with her seven points, assist, block, and two steals. Off the bench, Farrow offered a valuable eight points and three rebounds.

The women's basketball team plays next at Wilmington University on Tuesday, December 4, when they visit the Wildcats for an 8:00 p.m. CACC contest.
