Latoya Laing (Snellville, Ga.), and sophomore guard
Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin N.J.) gradually grew the Griffin lead to 17 points, 68-51 (2:25), before claiming an eventual 70-56 victory. Alexander's second double-double of the season, 18 points and 11 rebounds, led the Griffins to their second win of the season.
Laing and Alexander separated Chestnut Hill College (2-10) from Mercy College (0-9) midway through the closing period. The duo contributed 13 points to a 16-4 run that left the Griffins up 61-45 with 6:24 left to play. A brief Maverick reprisal brought the lead to 11, 61-50, with 5:35 to go, but fortunately is only served as a speed bump in the Griffins 14-point triumph.
Off the Maverick bench, seniors, guard Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) headlined the home team's effort. Williams led the way with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, a block, and two steals while Moore offered 13 points, two rebounds, and two steals in support. Junior guard Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the only Maverick starter to truly make an impact; she scrounged for ten points on 4-of-16 (25.0%) shooting performance to lead the unit's 22.6% (7-of-31) effort. Nardulli also recorded three rebounds, an assist, and five steals.
The Griffins superior shooting (24-of-56, 42.9% vs. 22-of-67, 32.8%) was the difference in the contest. Besides a 3-of-3 (100.0%) contribution from sophomore guard
Lila Jones (Lansdale, Pa.), nine points, the trio of Alexander, Laing, and Gorczynski combined for all but two of the Griffins remaining baskets. Alexander added two assists to her team-leading double-double. She was 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the field with two, three-point baskets (2-of-5, 40.0%), while Gorczynski matched Alexander's production with 18 of her points coming from behind the arch (6-of-10, 60.0%). Gorczynski also recorded six rebounds, an assist, and three steals in the affair. Laing totaled 17 points on 6-of-11 (54.5%) shooting, she also grabbed six rebounds.
The women's basketball team returns to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule after the New Year, when they host Georgian Court University in a 6:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, January 9.
