Box Score New Castle, Del. – (12/4/2012) – A late first-half Wilmington University run appeared to put Chestnut Hill College away early, but with a team effort the Griffins clawed back into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, only to fall a point shy at the final buzzer, 61-60. Seniors, guard Latoya Laing (Snellville, Ga.) and senior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) each offered double-double performances in the defeat, Laing recording the first of her career in a team-leading 17-point, 12-rebound, five-assist feat.

The contest was knotted at 20-20 midway through the first half, 9:28, but despite a 28-19 rebounding edge poor shooting (8-of-33, 24.2%) and turnovers (14) allowed Wilmington University (1-8, 1-3) to score 17 consecutive points for a 37-20 halftime advantage. After intermission, the Wildcat lead reached 20, 44-24, in the first few minutes (17:45), but Chestnut Hill College (1-7, 0-3) was not done yet. Laing, Alexander, and freshman guard Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Griffins on a rallying run that landed them a two-point lead, 53-51, at the four-minute mark (3:59). A Laing three-pointer delivered the advantage, but it was short-lived as a Griffin turnover and a three-point basket from senior guard Danielle Thomas (Toms River, N.J.) placed the Wildcats back up one, 54-53, heading to the final minutes (1:56). The Wildcats used their narrow advantage to lean on the Griffins and separate on free throws, 61-57, before a last-second three-point prayer from sophomore guard Lila Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) brought the final to its one point spread, 61-60.

Off the bench, sophomore guard Cari Callaway (Newark, Del.) and Thomas fueled the Wildcats first-half run. Callaway scored all 12 of her points in the opening period while Thomas offered seven of her 12 points in the frame. Callaway also made three steals. Freshman guards, Tenicia Spence (Baltimore, Md.) and Tiaja Harrold (Paulsboro, N.J.) were contributors as well. Spence with a team-high 13 points and three steals, and Harrold with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Laing scored in double digits for the fifth time this season while recording her first collegiate double-double. She totaled ten points and 11 rebounds in the Griffins 40-point second-half effort. Alexander also recorded a double-double, her first of the season, with 14 points, ten rebounds, two assists, a block, and two steals. McDonough finished the affair with nine points and eight rebounds.

The women's basketball team continues their CACC schedule at home on Saturday, December 8, with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Post University.
